Let’s Talk About Guest Photos

First and foremost, I understand the heart behind this: your people matter. You want to see them in your gallery. You want to remember how they laughed, how they danced, how they showed up for you. And that’s 100% valid.

One of the most common post-wedding questions I receive is:

“Will every guest be in the final gallery?”

Let’s talk about that transparently, kindly, and with some helpful tips to make sure your expectations align with my creative process.

As your photographer, my goal is always to capture the true energy of your wedding day. During intimate weddings, especially when I’m the sole photographer, my focus is on documenting the couple, your family, and the guests who are naturally present during key moments like the ceremony, toasts, or dance floor.

I work with a documentary style for much of the day, which means I capture what unfolds in real time. This might include bursts of laughter during cocktail hour, hugs during golden hour, or a quiet tear during the vows. But I won’t always catch every single guest unless they’re actively part of those moments. And since I don’t know which guests belong to which side of the family, I simply follow the energy and connection I see.

My Approach to Guest Candids

As a wedding photographer, especially when I’m working solo during intimate weddings, my focus is on telling the story of your day as it naturally unfolds.

That means prioritizing:

  • The couple (that’s you!)
  • Your immediate family (We prioritize them during the key moments and family portrait)
  • The guests who are present and engaged during key moments like the ceremony, speeches, and dancing

My shooting style leans heavily into documentary storytelling. I follow emotion, energy, and interaction, not a strict checklist. This means your final gallery reflects the spirit of the day rather than a posed roll call of every single attendee.

And while I do my best to include as many guests as possible, not everyone will always make it into the final collection, especially if they’re camera-shy, seated quietly during the festivities, or simply off in a corner during key moments.

On Perceived Guest Imbalance

Occasionally, couples feel like one side of the guest list got more camera time than the other. I truly get how that could feel frustrating.

Please know: it’s never intentional. Here’s what might be happening:

  • Some guests may be more expressive, visible, or involved during high-energy moments
  • I don’t always know who belongs to which side of the family unless I’m told or learned during a family portrait
  • A few guests may have requested photos directly
  • My attention naturally gravitates toward interaction, movement, and presence
  • If someone was on the dance floor, laughing through the toasts, or hugging you during golden hour, chances are they made it into the story.

Want to Make Sure Everyone Gets in the Gallery?

I love it when couples are intentional about this! If it’s important to you to have a record of every guest, here are two great options you can add to your timeline:

  • Big Group Photo

Gather everyone right after the ceremony or during the reception for one big smiling photo. It takes 5–10 minutes max, and you’ll get a wide shot of your full guest list.

  • The Photo Dash

A fun, fast-paced idea: the couple visits each table with me in tow after dinner, or have them come up to you at the sweetheart table, and we snap a quick photo with every group. You’ll end up with a full collection of faces, and it's a great excuse to say hi to everyone, too!

If this sounds like something you’d love, just let me know during our planning call, and we’ll make it part of the flow.

Why Some Photos Don’t Make the Cut

Your gallery is curated with love and intention. That means I carefully choose images that feel joyful, connected, and flattering. I avoid delivering photos where guests are:

  • Blinking
  • Mid-bite
  • Distracted or turned away
  • Caught in unflattering or awkward angles

This is all part of my commitment to delivering a polished, meaningful gallery that tells a cohesive and beautiful story.

I’m here to capture the heart of your wedding day honestly, artfully, and with care. While not every guest will appear in the final album candidly, you can absolutely make space for everyone to be photographed intentionally. Just tell me what matters most to you, and we’ll make it happen.

At the end of the day, I want your photos to reflect not just what happened, but how it felt. The hugs, the joy, the messy dance moves, the tiny glances, and the people who made your day unforgettable.

Let’s tell your story together, beautifully, candidly, and completely you.
